Locked out? What to do first
Five calm minutes before you call anyone, and how to spot a locksmith who'll overcharge you.

Before you call anyone, walk round the house. A back door on the latch or a window left open is the cheapest locksmith there is (but don’t climb anything you’d be scared to fall from).
Who has a spare?
A neighbour, a family member, the letting agent. Five phone calls are cheaper than a call-out.
Choosing a locksmith
- Ask for the price before they set off. A fixed call-out rate and the likely parts. “We’ll see when we get there” means a big bill.
- Look for an address. A real workshop, not just a mobile number and a map pin.
- Expect to show ID. A good locksmith checks you live there. One who doesn’t will open the door for anyone.
Don’t drill first
Most doors open without damage. If the first thing they reach for is a drill, ask why.
